Work Addiction

Is your identity completely wrapped up in your work? Do you use work as a means of seeking approval? Do your kids ever ask you, “How come you’re never home—don’t you love us?” If this sounds familiar, you may have a work addiction.

A work addict is someone who cannot self-regulate their work schedule or set healthy limits. Like other forms of addictive behavior, the consequences of work addiction can be devastating for the individual, his family and co-workers.

Work addiction is symptomatic of underlying emotional issues and compulsive behaviors—and in many instances the work addict is not even aware of the nature of the problem. What they are aware of is that life is not fun anymore and that their addiction is negatively impacting their career and home life. Work addicts are driven to perform even harder and accomplish even more due to their inability to relax or feel a sense of accomplishment. In many instances, these behaviors are self imposed and not based on an accurate self-perception. Work addicts tend to use work much like an alcoholic uses liquor to self-medicate and avoid negative emotions.

At Confidential Counseling Services, Inc., we go beyond the symptoms of work addiction to treat the core issues driving the addiction including self-esteem, moderation, reality, dependence and setting limits. To find out more, contact us at 713-542-4649.(866) 769-9219
