Therapeutic Support Groups

A therapeutic support group is seen as the most effective and successful form of treatment for all addictive disorders.

Naturally everyone is reticent and nervous initially about even the idea of walking into a group of perfect strangers...not knowing what to expect...and especially with the thought of talking about your most personal problems with a group of strangers.

Believe it or not, most people leave relieved, comfortable and even enjoy "group"! Some people are most comfortable just listening, some asking questions, some just responding to questions from others. Some just need to listen and say nothing for a few weeks. And that's okay.

Why Therapeutic Support Groups?

  • It is comforting to realize that others have very similar problems, issues, and experiences as you do; that you (and your problems) are not so unusual.
  • Many people feel that if others really knew me (or my problems) they surely would not like me. Group is a good forum to come to the realization that the opposite may be true; that when you do decide to share your issues and feelings with others, they feel closer to you and even like you better.  In a safe setting, this can be a great experience.
  • It is an opprtunity to get feedback from peers...feedback about your situation, your thinking and feedback about you (e.g. how you come across to others). It's an opprtunity to learn to recognize and deal with your feeling differently, to try out new skills and to practice coming across differently.
  • It's a great tool to reduce social anxiety, an overly high need to please others or an overly high need to seek approval; to get to know yourself better and to increase communication, intimacy, and empathy skills.
  • It is a chance to get positive peer pressure, support, and accountability in a safe environment.
  • It gives you access to our extensive educational curriculum.
